I don't think though that 78s are worth paying somebody else to process for you. Ive heard people say to upgrade the stylus, but listening to my records the sound was excellent Also I heard people complain about the rpms being too fast but. It takes maybe 15 minutes of post-processing per record, and gets pretty tedious pretty quickly. I play the record, use the two 78 software conversions, find some additional settings that please my ear, and take out the biggest pops and clicks if they're particularly evident. There is another version of the Ion turntable that has an audio input in that allows you to similarly digitize cassettes or 8-tracks or what-have-you that's the version I wish I'd bought although there are other inexpensive devices to digitize other analog sources.ħ8s are a lot of fun. This all runs very easily on my lame-but-tiny Shuttle Hackintosh, which has a dual-core Atom netbook chip. Audacity has a very clever 45-to-78 setting in postprocessing which increases the pitch and keeps the proper tempo.Įither Audacity or one of the other editing programs I ran across, perhaps Final Vinyl or Spin Doctor, adjusts the levels to the standards for the old 78rpm turntables - both the 78rpm needle and the level setting don't seem to be well-publicized techniques on the web but they both make huge differences compared to the 'stock' recording.
